Prepayment Meters

Please click on the links below for the information you require:

Bord Gáis Networks generally installs credit meters in most locations and customers receive a bill from their gas supplier indicating their gas usage for previous weeks/months and the amount to be paid. However, in some instances Bord Gáis Networks, at the request of a gas supplier, installs a Prepayment Meter, also known as a Gas Card Meter.  These meters allow customers to purchase an amount of gas credit on a Gas Card which is inserted into the meter and the purchased credit is then transferred directly from the card to the meter. Gas Card meters can assist customers with budgeting for their gas usage.

About Natural Gas Card

Your initial Natural Gas Card is supplied to you when your Gas Card Meter is installed. Customers are advised to look after their natural gas cards as there is a charge for a replacement. Customers can purchase their Natural Gas Card from selected Payzone Outlets. A replacement card must be inserted into your Prepayment Meter to match and activate it before you can actually purchase gas credits. Once a replacement Gas Card has been purchased and inserted into the gas meter, then the old card will no longer work with that meter.

If credit has expired and the 'OFF' message is displayed on the meter display, then please ensure that all gas appliances are switched off before inserting your Gas Card. Once you have inserted your topped-up card follow the instructions on the meter display in order to restore your gas supply.

If there is a problem with the card:

  • Check the surface of your card is clean
  • Try it in the meter again making sure the gold-coloured chip is facing towards the meter display
  • Check you are able to buy credit with the card

If the problem persists contact your Gas Supplier.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q. I have no gas, yet I purchased credit today.

A. What does the display panel show? It should display the amount of credit on the meter. If it doesn't, check the left hand corner of the meter:

  • If display shows 'ON', it means that gas is available but there may be a problem with one of your gas appliances, in which case you will need to get an installer to fix the problem. Visit the Appliance Servicing section for further information.
  • If the display shows 'OFF', check if any of the following messages are showing on the display panel;
    • Call help
    • Battery fail
    • Blank panel with no message
    • Card not accepted

If you see any of the above 'OFF' messages on your display panel please call our Customer Service Team 1850 200 694 who will arrange for a fitter to call out and inspect your meter.

Q. I purchased €10.00 on my card, but I didn't get €10.00 credit.

A. Have you used Emergency Credit recently or have you used gas in recent weeks? When Emergency Credit is in use no standing charge is deducted but the standing charge accumulates as a debt on the meter. If you have not used gas for some time, the meter will look for the charge every day. Any debt on the meter will be recovered (including any Emergency Credit used or Daily Standing Charge) when you insert a credited Gas Card. Also, if you are repaying a debt to your gas supplier through the prepayment meter, the meter will recover an agreed daily amount, which will also affect your credit.

Q. I have no credit left, where can I vend with my Gas Card?

A. You can top-up your Natural Gas Card from selected shops displaying both the Payzone and Natural Gas logos. To view the full list of participants near you please visit the Payzone Website or simply call your Gas Supplier.

Q. I have lost my Gas Card, how can I get a new one?

A. You can purchase your new natural gas card from selected shops displaying both Payzone and Natural Gas logos.

Q. I have topped-up my Gas Card, but no credit uploaded onto the meter?

A. Check that the surface of your card is clean. Try it in the meter again making sure the gold-coloured chip is facing towards the meter display, Always keep the Vending Receipt until you see the credit on the meter. If the problem persists contact your Gas Supplier.

Please Note: Prepayment meters are currently only available in certain areas of Dublin. They are not available countrywide and can only be requested through your gas supplier. Their general availability is currently under consideration by the gas industry and the Commission for Energy Regulation.
