Northern Ireland

Creating an All-Island Energy Market

Bord Gáis is currently involved in the development of a stg£200 million network development programme in Northern Ireland, with ongoing investment planned for the construction of gas networks in 10 towns in the coming years.

Our activities in Northern Ireland are carried out by two separate businesses; BGE (Northern Ireland) and firmus energy.

BGE(Northern Ireland) is licenced to build high-pressure transmission pipelines in Northern Ireland and is in the process of planning the construction of the South-North gas pipeline, from Gormanston in County Meath to Belfast.

firmus energy is the company licensed to distribute and supply natural gas to homes and businesses in Northern Ireland.

Northern Ireland Gas Network Development

In February 2002, BGE (Northern Ireland) was awarded a Gas Conveyance Licence by the Northern Ireland Authority for Energy Regulation (NIAER), to build, own and operate two natural gas transmission pipelines in Northern Ireland. The construction of these pipelines will for the first time, make natural gas accessible to many towns throughout Northern Ireland, outside the greater Belfast area, and contribute to the creation of an all-island energy market.

The North-West gas pipeline, from Carrickfergus to Londonderry, was commissioned on schedule in October 2004. This pipeline serves the new Coolkeeragh power station in Derry and also enables the development of gas networks adjacent to the route.

The South-North gas pipeline runs from Gormanston, in County Meath, to Ballyclare, Co. Antrim, where it links into the North-West pipeline. It was commissioned on schedule in october 2006 and facilitates gas supply to selected towns along this pipeline route. This pipeline creates and all-island gas transmission network, connecting the grids North and South for the very first time.

Bringing Natural Gas To Homes and Industry

In March 2005, BGE’s distribution and supply businesses in Northern Ireland, now trading as firmus energy, was awarded a distribution and supply licence by the Northern Ireland Authority for Energy Regulation (NIAER) to distribute and supply gas to 10 towns along the routes of the North-West pipeline and the planned South-North pipeline.
