In The Community
Bord Gais Networks and the Networks Services Centre Project are involved in a
number of initiatives in the local community.
Schools Business Partnership Programme – Beneavin De La Salle College, Finglas
Bord Gáis is actively involved in the Schools Business Partnership Programme, an initiative run by Business in the Community Ireland that encourages businesses to link with a local designated secondary school to provide students with an insight into the world of employment, to encourage them to remain in school, to recognise the value and importance of education and to provide the opportunity to learn about the diversity of employment roles within a company. Bord Gáis is currently partnered with three schools close to our main operational bases. In Finglas, we are partnered with Beneavin College and a number of staff are actively involved in this project. Other opportunities for support and sponsorship in the vicinity of the building are to be explored.
In March 2010, 12 students from Beneavin School’s Applied Leaving Cert Class visited the Bord Gais Office in St. Margaret’s Road as part of the Schools Business Partnership. During the visit, students had the opportunity to see and try some of the skills and tecniques used in the gas industry, were also shown how a central heating system works and saw the technology and systems behind Gas Control and how emergency calls from the public are handled and how these calls are distributed to the fitters around the country.
DARC Space – Architecture Gallery
Bord Gáis Networks is the lead sponsor of the DARC Space architecture gallery, a sponsorship that is aligned to the Networks Services Centre Project.
Located on North Great George’s Street and situated in the cultural quarter of the north inner city, the new DARC (Dublin Architecture) Space first opened its doors in October 2009. Denis Byrne Architects have created this new gallery space in the award-winning Cigar Box building as a vibrant hub for exhibitions, talks and debates on contemporary architecture. The current economic downturn has been identified as an opportune time for rethinking and repositioning the Irish construction sector towards more sustainable development and DARC will host a series of exhibitions and events to broaden this debate.
The new gallery is intended to fill a gap (there is a lack of dedicated architecture galleries in Ireland) and hopes to intensify the debate about the future of the built environment in Ireland. Exhibitions will look in particular at projects that promote an innovative and energy-efficient architecture. DARC Space is a non profit making organisation. Further information on DARC is available from Maggie Moran at Denis Byrne Architects 01-8788535, maggie@denisbyrnearchitects.ie.
