Network Development
Bord Gis Networks continues to develop the transmission and distribution network in Ireland, improving the security of the network, enhancing the capacity of the system and ensuring that safety remains the top priority for the business.
During the past 10 years, Bord Gis Networks has completed the Second Sub-Sea Interconnector Pipeline, linking Ireland with south west Scotland; the Pipeline to the West, linking Dublin with Galway and the North-West Pipeline, linking Belfast with Derry City.
In 2006 projects completed included the construction of the Mayo-Galway Pipeline, to facilitate the supply of natural gas from the Corrib gas field to the natural gas network; and the South-North Pipeline, which connected the natural gas networks in Northern Ireland with those in the Republic of Ireland for the first time and facilitated the development of an all-Ireland natural gas network.
During 2009, a new 50km transmission pipeline, between Curraleigh West and Midleton that reinforces gas supplies to the Cork area was undertaken and a new transmission pipeline to Dublin Airport to serve the new terminal was also built.
The Cast-Iron Mains Renewal Programme was successfully completed in 2009. Over the past five years, the old cast-iron mains have all been replaced with modern polyethylene pipe. As a result, the distribution network now ranks highly against its European counterparts, with polyethylene pipe throughout the network.
New Towns Phase 3
Following on from the connection of numerous new towns in recent years, Bord Gáis Networks has completed the Phase 3 towns report on behalf of Gaslink, which examines the feasibility of connecting a further 43 towns across nine regional groupings to the network. The CER approved four new towns for connection; Kinsale and Innishannon in Co. Cork, Tipperary Town and Kells, Co. Meath.
