New Towns Phase 2

Project Overview

Bord Gáis Networks undertook an extensive study to evaluate the extension of the natural gas network to additional towns around the country. In November 2006, Phase 1 of the study was published and 11 towns along the route of the Mayo-Galway pipeline qualified for connection to the network. This project, the Gaswest Project, is a €50m investment in the development of natural gas infrastructure for the West of Ireland. The majority of these towns have been connected to the networks. Click here for information on the Gaswest Project.

Phase 2 of the study was completed in 2007 and a further 6 towns qualified for connection to the natural gas network. The cost of bringing natural gas to these 6 towns will be approximately €23m.

The six towns are:

  • Cashel, Co Tipperary
  • Cahir, Co Tipperary
  • Gort, Co. Galway
  • Loughrea, Co Galway
  • Ballinrobe, Co Mayo
  • Monasterevin, Co Kildare

Five of the six towns have been connected to date, with Cahir due for connection to the network.

The principle objective of the study was to determine the economic viability of connecting these towns to the network, in accordance with the new Gas Connection Policy. The analysis allowed Bord Gáis Networks to economically assess regional groups of towns, to be connected to the natural gas network, which may otherwise be uneconomical on their own.
