Connection of New Towns

Bord Gáis Networks, on behalf of Gaslink, has undertaken a review of towns that are currently not connected to the national gas network. All regions have been taken into consideration.

Previous reviews completed in the years 1996 & 2001 found that it was not feasible to bring gas to towns remote from the existing network.

A revised Network Connections Policy was adopted in April 2006, subsequently updated in June 2008, allowing towns to be amalgamated into a regional group and subsequently appraised as a single project. Extended payback periods of 25 years were also taken into account.

The New Towns Analysis Phase I Report was published in October 2006 identifying 11 towns which proved viable for connection to the grid when analysed in a single group. The New Towns Analysis Phase II report was published in October 2007, containing the results of a further 15 towns and a review of updated data for Ballinrobe, a non-viable town in Phase I. 6 towns proved viable for connection in the Phase II study.

This Phase III Report contains the results of the remaining 39 towns, including Tipperary, which was not completed in the Phase II Study, of which 4 have proved viable.

The overall New Towns study has considered the viability of 70 towns across the country, of which 21 have proven viable for a connection. Future assessments of potential new towns will be completed on an individual basis as new information or developments occur in individual areas of the natural gas network.
