Reading Your Meter

Meter Readings

Bord Gáis Networks has agreed with the Commission for Energy Regulation (CER) to attempt to physically read your meter a minimum of four times each year. Bord Gáis Networks will also generate an estimate reading on two further occasions during the year. Estimates are calculated using a specialised mathematical tool that is approved for use by the CER. All readings are issued to your gas supplier who is responsible for billing you for the gas used. That means at a minimum Bord Gáis Networks will supply six meter readings to your gas supplier and they should be a combination of actual and estimated reads.

Access To The Meter

It is very important that Bord Gáis Networks meter readers are allowed access to your gas meter. If the meter is not accessible to the meter reader, then the meter reader will leave a Dial-a-Read card, so that you can submit your own meter reading to us. If you submit a meter read to us within 3 days of the meter reader's visit, then that read will be supplied to your gas supplier for your bill. Otherwise we will generate an estimate reading for you gas usage and supply that to your supplier.

Reading your Gas Meter

If you have a digital meter where you can directly read the numbers (digits) like the diagram below, read the figures as shown from left to right, ignoring the numbers to the right of the comma. If you wish to keep the meter reading or submit it to us or to your gas supplier, place the numbers in the corresponding squares on the Dial-A-Read Card (see example below).

Dial (Clock) Meter

If your have a dial (clock) meter it will display a series of dials, like the diagram below. The four small dials at the bottom should be read from left to right.

  • The position of the pointer on the dial indicates what the reading should be.
  • If the pointer is between two figures, use the lower figure, e.g. if it is between 7 and 8, use 7. However, if the pointer is between 9 and 0, use 9.
  • Place the numbers in the corresponding squares on the Dial-A-Read Card (see example below).
  • The reading on the Dial Card Meter example above is 7479.
