Moving Home
If you are an existing gas customer about to move home, there are a number of actions that you may need to carry out:
- closure of your gas account, or
- transition of gas consumption responsibility to the new property owner, and/or
- transfer of your existing gas account to your new natural gas home
Please ensure you follow each of the actions outlined below to ensure a smooth transition.
Bord Gáis Networks advises that you should take the following actions at least 7 days prior to vacating your present residence.
There are 3 different scenarios for a customer moving home:
- Existing Gas Customer - Moving from one gas home to another gas home
- Existing Gas Customer - Moving from a natural gas home to non-gas home
- New Customer - Moving to a natural gas home for the first time or from a non-gas to a natural gas home
Existing Gas Customer - Moving from one gas home to another gas home
Bord Gáis Networks advises that you should take the following actions at least 7 days prior to vacating your present home.
1. Close your account at your old address
- Contact your gas supplier and provide them with your existing account details, name, account reference number, Gas Point Reference Number (GPRN) and address
- Submit a final read meter reading (this should be agreed with the incoming occupant). You will remain liable for gas used at your old address until you provide a final meter reading
- Provide your gas supplier with your new address and contact details
- Please provide contact details for the incoming occupant if they require the gas supply to remain on. Otherwise the meter will be locked (access to the meter will be required) and the new owner will be required to call their supplier to arrange for a meter unlock. There may be a charge to the new owner for this call out and it may also take some time to facilitate this request. Thus, it is preferable to avoid unceccessary delays and cost by providing the contact details of the incoming occupant
Please Note: Please bear in mind that you remain liable for gas consumed until such time as you inform your supplier that you are leaving the premises and provide a final meter reading.
2. Open your account at your new address:
- Contact your chosen gas supplier and provide your name, new address and contact details
- Submit your opening meter reading (the reading at which you are taking over the natural gas supply). If your meter is locked, or if there is gas service but no meter present, please contact your gas supplier and they will make an appointment with you to unlock or fit your meter. You may be charged a commissioning fee for unlocking/fitting your meter
- Provide your old address
- Provide your old account number (see your last natural gas bill)
Existing Gas Customer - Moving from a natural gas home to a non-gas home

1. Close your account at your old address
- Contact your gas supplier and provide your existing account details, name, account reference number, Gas Point Reference Number (GPRN) and address
- Submit a final read meter reading (this should be agreed with the incoming occupant). You will remain liable for gas used at your old address until you provide a final meter reading
- Provide your gas supplier with your new address and contact details
- Please provide contact details for the incoming occupant if they require the gas to remain on. Otherwise the meter will be locked (access to the meter will be required) and the new owner will be required to contact their supplier to arrange for a meter unlock. There may be a charge to the new owner for this call out and it may also take some time to facilitate this request. Please note: Please bear in mind that you remain liable for gas consumed until such time as you inform your supplier that you are leaving the premises and provide a final meter reading.
